Solar cannot be "free", but it CAN be an investment that will pay for itself, and then re-pay the investment several times over. Solar done right should pay for itself 3 or 4 more times over.
Unfortunately, nearly all of the solar systems being installed in the US are designed to covertly shift the financial benefit to the company offering the system. In 75% of cases the solar provider even takes the tax benefits. In the case of solar leases and PPAs (Power Purchasing Agreements) the homeowner does not own the equipment. A Uniform Commercial Code filing aka UCC-1 (which is effectively the equivalent of a lien) is put on the home.
Solar leases, PPAs, Community Solar, and many other arrangements are designed to maximize the financial benefit to the "service provider" while keeping the customer dependent. Even most outright solar equipment sales are traps where the customer becomes a captive of the manufacturer of the equipment via "user agreements" for the proprietary software needed to operate the equipment the customer thinks he/she owns.
If you get an offer for "free solar", it is a scam. They will contract you to make payments to the "solar company" (aka predatory bank) for the next 30 or so years. Your payments will shift all financial benefits to the "solar" company. If you would like me to review and explain any particular offer, call me I will be happy to help.
Note: If a solar system is grid dependent or maintains an internet connection, you don't control it. If you don't control it, you don't really own it.

All of the national and regional companies include "Grid Services" in their business models. All of the local companies install equipment that has "Grid Services" built into the software that runs the equipment.
"Grid Services" is soft language for: their access to take electricity from your batteries".
Whether you buy or lease your equipment, from a local installer or a national company, if you use equipment from ANY of the mainstream companies, in a brownout or blackout they will have the Right and the Ability to take the electricity from your batteries and to sell it to whomever they want, for their profit.
"Grid Services" is the core of their business model.
You are not to own or control your system; you are to be a dependent subscriber.
Solar should be a GREAT investment.
Solar is clean, unlimited energy that can be collected with a system designed to pay for itself and then to be profitable. A large residential hybrid system with battery back-up can pay for itself in under 9 years by saving the homeowner from paying for electric from the utility company. That same system is expected to pay for itself 2 more times over while the panels are still under warranty (25 years).
but this is not what makes solar a really GREAT investment...

Even if you buy their "Grid-Down" battery systems, they will use you and their market share of other "subscribers" to leverage additional power and profit for themselves, selling the electricity out of your batteries when you need it the most; brown-outs and black-outs.
They will do what they want with the power in your batteries because you are running their software, and you OKed their "user agreement".
They call this scheme: "Grid Services" and/or "Behind the Meter Resources".

There is a great 30% federal income tax credit, with no limit.
If you spend $20K on solar, you will get $6K taken off your federal income tax liability.
Your final price for the whole system is just $14,000.
In NY there is an additional 25% income tax credit, max $5k benefit.
Meaning a $20K solar system will earn you a $5k (25%) NY income tax credit.
State and federal tax credits can be stacked.
So final price with NY and Fed credit on the $20K system is just $10,500.
Most Hybrid Solar installs also benefit from Net-Metering.
